Wow what a year 2014

I don't write much post! But around now when I have time to relax a little and look back at another amazing year it just blows my mind. I love what I do! So I am not complaining when I say it’s not easy, but loving what I do is what makes it worth it. I am looking forward to another amazing year in 2015. We are now in the middle of our 13 Th. year in business, if I could bottle up all I learned in 13 yrs. it would be one large bottle. I started June 13 2002, I was meeting people at my home and going out to meet them at there house to book weddings! At that time I had already worked as professional wedding photographer as we'll as a portrait photographer (I was shooting film). I had no idea what would happen I just knew that I was going to make my business a success. Over the years I contemplated what that success was? When was I successful? There are so many answers to that question; the problem is I am always working towards something better, new ways of doing things, new things to offer. I don't think I can be successful in the big picture because that would mean I have to stop improving and trying new things. So I have to celebrate the small success. So I am celebrating the success of 2014, 2013.2012.2011.2010.2009.2008, 2007,2006,2005,2004,2003, and 2002, Wow that’s a lot to success to celebrate!!!!!!

What some photographers don't want you to know?

I get the question all the time:
"my Photographer gave me the cd will you make an album for me"
I say "no"
Most new or unexperienced photographers want to just give you the cd and go,  "shoot and burn" its called because they photograph the wedding day, burn you a cd and they are done with you! But what do you get? You get a cd of pictures that you will probably end up spending ton of money to get printed at walmart, walgreens or some other 1 hr photo store and get sub par quality photo's.
Its horrible that people are left with out printed memories of there wedding day, what happens if the cd is lost? scratched? broken? stuck in a cd drive?. Most of the time the photographers that do this because they have no liability to you after the wedding day don't even save the photo's.
Hire professional photographer, One thats been around for some time, One that has a studio, one that has quality equipment, one that knows how and has the contacts with professional printers and album makers to offer you quality finished products. You will be happier and the end when all the cost are added up you will probably save money and get better products and have memories of the day you spent thousands and thousdands Dollars on.

I am the owner of BKM Photography, if you hire us or someone else it doesn’t matter just listen to my advise, I don’t want to have to tell you "NO I can not make you an album from your photographer that just gave you the cd" at the next bridal show.

why wedding photography?

There are many reason why I love doing photography and also many reasons why I love doing wedding photography. As much as I love wedding photography it has its challenges. When I was young I think 6 yrs old I found a pictures of a bride and groom,  They were looking at each other with a beautiful stained glass window in the background. I looked at that picture a lot wondering so many things, Like "where is that window"?, "What are they thinking", "Why are they there", I still think about that picture and when I do weddings I think about the fact that one day people will look at my pictures and hopefully bring back memories or emotions or questions such as that one did for me. Along with all that comes the challenges of the wedding day. I don't think I could list them all or even think of all of them on the spot right now with all that I have seen over the last 14 yrs, I value that experience of what I have learned over the years so much because it helps me deal with all the surprises of the wedding day like its second nature and also frees my mind up to come up with pictures that hopefully one day will be valued just as much as the one I mentioned above.

Weddings require specialized equipment and training!

Its your wedding day and the last thing you want is someone showing up to photograph your wedding with a point and shoot camera, It has happened! Or not showing up at all because there camera broke, It has happened! These are just a couple stories I have heard. It makes me so aggravated when I hear these stories for many reasons, #1 because it gives good wedding photographers a bad name but a good wedding photographer would never consider doing a wedding with a point and shoot camera and always has back up equipment. The problem has 2 parts to it, 1 part is the new photographer saying " I want to do wedding" but they don't have the money to buy the correct equipment so they use what they have. the 2 nd part of the problem to be honest is the bride & groom that book them, Most of the time they know these people are just starting out and they may even say "I'll do it so I have pictures for my portfolio" So the bride & groom book them thinking that $500 they paid is going to get them exceptable pictures of there wedding day, Until the wedding day comes. Don't risk your wedding day on someone just starting out. All Good wedding photographers started out being an apprentice to a good wedding photographer, They have learned from someone that has tought them the ins and outs of the business not just picked up a camera one day and deciding I am going to be a wedding photographer. Also when you hear these stories don't confuse them with real profession photographers because they are not. A real profession spends years training, hours getting ready, and a lifetime learning wedding photography. Its not an overnight thought to be a wedding photographer.
